| >60 MYA | Complex life evolves (fish, a few land vertebrates, many invertebrates). Proto-gods develop first vestiges of something like self-awareness. Not a human-like intelligence, driven by their instinctive connection with the cosmos and the "rules" as much as anything. |
| c. 60 MYA | Proto-gods begin to push
development
of life, some more than others. They are striving towards
something
none of them understand: sentience. New life forms evolve in
a
geologic heartbeat (a few 100,000 years): dinosaurs. Due to
further manipulation, some of these creatures develop sentience.
They will later be called "dragons." There are very few of them
(meaning
the sentience they "lend" to their creators is limited) but they
eventually
develop cultures and learn to shape power. As they become
self-aware,
some attempt to ignore or defy the powers' plans for them.
This creates the first conflicts between what will some day be the "gods" and the "demons." The question at stake: to force these new life forms to obey, and to keep meddling, or to leave well enough alone. In the war that develops, both sides manifest through the earth itself, as volcanoes, earthquakes, typhoons, and even greater catastrophes. Parts of the dark moon itself are pulled from the sky. The world is reshaped. Only some sea creatures, a few small vertebrates, and some of the dragons survive. Most of the dragons who survive flee the planet magically, but some return later. The proto-gods themselves sink back into their more primal forms. As mammals evolve and some reach a certain level of self awareness (apes, dolphins) so do the gods. They dimly realize they almost destroyed themselves and everything else, and mutually agree, regardless of "side," to not meddle any longer by manipulating the forces of nature. |
| 120,000 BP | Early humans
evolve. They
are self-aware, and have a simple animistic religion. They gods
begin
to feed off of and change because of their hopes, fears, worship.
Because they are self-aware, they know they are mortal. This
gives
them fear of death. They can imaging bad things happening even before
they
actually occur. So the darkest aspects of the powers can begin to
evolve too– not just death but terror, cruelty, etc.
Gods and demons alike find a loop-hole in their earlier agreement. They can take a finite shape (manlike or beast-like) and walk the earth in that shape. The gods continue to evolve and "bud" creating more sophisticated archetypes like "justice" over time. But two things cause further conflict: 1. The humans too want free will and won't always obey. 2. Even if they always wanted to obey, they couldn't obey every power, because as they evolve into more sophisticated archetypes, more potential exists for diametric opposites to form (love/hate, justice/revenge, etc.) and also more of a potential for ethical weight to be added by the humans to those archetypes (i.e. if you know you will die and don't want to, then death ceases to be just a fact of existence and becomes "evil"). Thus the "gods" and the "demons" come into conflict again. Now the enmity and the differences between the sides is greater. Abd Aten is imprisoned early in this stage of the conflict. Outright war between the
factions
begins. Limited by physical form, the devastation to the planet is
less,
but still substantial. The gods win, largely because the
primitive
tribes of humans willingly worshiping them give them a little edge, and
because they are willing to sacrifice that power to bind BOTH
themselves
and the demons outside of new-ly created metaphysical walls around the
planet. They can communicate with the creatures inside via
illusion,
dream, channeled power, etc. but not in person. If the gods were
to break the barrier to "go in," then the demons would be free to do
the
same.
As human society slowly rebuilds over the next 1000's of years, it evolves simple stone age villages and towns with political rivalries. The fey imitate them and the divisions between the courts result. |
| c. 30,000 BP | The generations of fey,
over time,
realize as the gods did, that (despite being more physical) their forms
and even mental natures are shaped by these short-lived sickly little
humans.
They also realize that they need human vitality to avoid stagnating and
remaining unchanging forever. The majority of them decide to take
over the primitive human stone-age villages and camps. Some style
themselves as immortal god-kings, encouraging humans to worship them,
and
creating generally static civilizations reminiscent of ancient Egypt or
Mesopotamia. They actively adopt some of the known divine
archetypes
(love, justice, law, etc.). These societies remain unchanged for
longer than human memory could comprehend, adapting only when they
needed
to (to changing geographical situations) and using magic to sustain the
fields and such. The only conflicts are sporadic and localized
wars
between the courts.
Over time, however, the wiser among the god-kings realize that something is wrong. They wanted to rule the humans so that the fey would share in their vitality, but he opposite has happened. The humans are stagnating, and not changing. Fewer and fewer of them have "great ideas" any more. They don't experiment with magic any more, they just take their existence for granted. Some of the fey are, of course, perfectly happy with this. This is the beginning of the Great War between the courts. |
| c. 15,000 BP | The Great War. The
fey kings
of Earth and Water ally against the courts of Fire and Air. Fire
and Air believe humans must be left alone to develop freely. Earth and
water do not wish to give up control or influence over their
"pets."
Fire and Air are more powerful individually, but fewer in number.
They sacrifice their immortality in order to gain the power to defeat
their
foes. In anger, the king of Earth, tutored by a dragon before
betraying
and imprisoning her, decides that if he can't have the planet, no one
will.
He decides to bring down the remaining fragments of the dark
moon.
The impact of this would surely have destroyed the entire planet.
One of the "gods" intervenes: Prometheus.
Prometheus separates the world into different "realms" or "planes" moving the king of Earth and those physically near him far from the forces of Air and Fire. The many "Shadows" of Praedia (in the Amber sense) now stretch between. The moon is also caught up in this vast magic, splintering through many realities. Terrible devastation still wracks the human world, and some of the worlds around it. Other shadow worlds are totally destroyed, but some escape damage. In their farthest shadow, the forces of Earth and Sea (as well as any others fighting near them) are trapped in exile in a nearly-magicless land. Other fey and humans were isolated in other folds and shadows. Another consequence was that the protective walls around Praedia were fractured and stretched. Demons still had to be summoned , but it was much easier. More powerful ones could be brought through, and by less powerful individuals. They could stay for longer, manifest more physically, and even be relatively permanently bound via a Greater Joining ritual or Possession. In undertaking his action, Prometheus gave up much of his power and himself became "stuck" between distant shadow realities. While the other powers knew that his actions had been the "least evil" they were angry at the results and strengthened the walls around Prometheus rather than freeing him. They consider him too impulsive and reckless. |
| Post-15,000 BP | Magic in Praedia proper
fluctuates
wildly over the next 1-2000 years. The climate is one of
year-round
cold and clouds for years after the impact. The fragment of the
moon
to land in this reality hit at the edge of the Anteian Bay, deepening
it
and creating the Anteian Sea. Most of the great City-States of
the
God-Kings (Fey) were destroyed. Most of the surviving
members
of the Courts of Air and Fire, now mortal (the peoples who will become
the "Elves") began to abide by the new policy of non-interference in
human
affairs, although the two groups still associated with one another and
helped each other survive during the Dark Years.
Over time, two things happened. First, the bulk of the humans drift away and form their own civilizations. Some humans had always been "Free Range" of course, either untouched by the Courts or at their periphery. Now the ex-pets begin forming societies that will some day be the Gallacian, Achaean, and Sea Raider cultures. Those individuals who were descended from the higher ranking classes of the old City-States, who had been bred to have longer lifespans and more magic, tended to stay closer to their ex-masters, sometimes developing something like Teacher/Student relationships with them, and continuing to live in their cities. Second, most of the Elves withdrew to the far east of the continent, away from the Anteian basin. They often turned away from the old Arcane magics and manipulation of deep power, believing it led to their downfall. Instead they focused on self-discipline, meditation, mental magics, waking-dreaming and manipulation of personal Chi. A minority did not leave the old ways, however. They, over thousands of year, were subtly influenced by demons. The demons particularly sought to communicate with those elves who wanted their immortality back. They promised great knowledge – the secrets of the universe. They also slowly convinced these Elves that the whole sacrifice, the war behind it, and he freedom of the humans was wrong. Slowly the teaching relationship they had with their human allies became unbalanced and manipulative, and small groups of humans found themselves pet/slaves once again. |
| 2450 BP | The groups of humans
re-enslaved
by the Southern kingdom of the Elves (as opposed to their Eastern
cousins)
unite and use what they have learned from their masters about Numen
Altum,
summoning, and High Magic to rebel and free themselves. The
demons
curiously enough, quietly help the humans, betraying the Elves to whom
they had promised power.... A few very early alliances are formed
between human summoners and demons, although this won't become a major
corrupting influence on their society until much later. In large
part this is because of the human discovery, through hints in ancient
fey
manuscripts recently recovered, of the Spirit of Man. This Spirit
and service to it is what drives and empowers these ex-slaves.
They
gather together many other small groups of men under their banner and
wage
war against the Southern Kingdom, essentially destroying it through
greater
numbers and the power of those who could Channel this Jungian
Spirit.
After their victory, the men determine to move away from Elven lands
entirely
and establish their own Kingdom of the Spirit of Man.
Also sometime during this time, the Gods realize that they can gather information about the world and its people, and keep an eye on demonic influence, via the creation of avatars in mortal flesh. Most of these are relatively low-power and do the "Wandering Advisor" thing, as in Prof. Tolkien's Middle Earth |
| 2400 BP | Founding of the Republic of the Spirit of Man, the initial 12 houses who led the westward diaspora of the proto-Imperials and any other men who would follow them. They settle on the Western shore of the continent. A ship blown totally off-course in a storm discovers the Western Islands, and the leaders of the kingdom decide that this even was "destined" and make those islands their new homeland and sanctuary. Discovery of the fact that there are no fey on the islands despite the presence of significant Numen Altum confirms the belief that this is some sort of destined land and perhaps even the origin of mankind in the very distant mythical past (before the shattering of the worlds).... |
| 1500 BP | The leaders of the 12 Houses, due to hardship from climate changes and increasing trouble holding on to their coastal lands, decide to elect a leader-for-life from among themselves. This is the first Emperor, although he is not called that. He is very popular, as is his son after him. They make sure the leaders of the 12 and the other important members of society who represent the Republic in it's Senate continue to feel like they are in charge. And the emperor and his son also win a lot of battles. Over the nearly 100 years of their combined reigns, the position of Princeps becomes accepted and permanent. Within another generation, the Princeps had added Imperator to his titles. The nobles of the major houses still had (and have) significant rights, but the pomp of the Imperial court convinces them to be obedient when they technically have the power to thwart the Emperor. |
| 1100 BP | Creation of the Obsidian Throne to "increase the majesty and power of the Emperor." A slow expansion of the powers of the Eyes of the Throne occurs. |
| c. 1020-980 BP | Gods sense growing power of demons in the world and discover that demons have learned how to create something like avatars via bonding with willing mages (After birth, rather than at conception as the gods do it. The demons don't want to have to grow up as a human -- ick. This makes demon avatars more powerful on the surface, but they don't truly share the benefits of mortality, and the ability to make the ultimate sacrifice for victory.). The gods begin to create more powerful avatars to help men fight the demons. Last Cataclysm. Faerie and the Mundane world, which had been drifting closer together, re-sundered. The Imperial Islands are shattered and only about 60% remains above water. Large parts of the western coastlines of the North Continent, particluarly the blasted sites of the Great Battles are subsumed beneath the waves over the next 40-50 years. There is 40-50% mortality among the peoples on the Northern continent, and conditions are nearly as bad in the south. |
| 980-800 BP | Kingdoms founded in name in the years immediately after the Cataclysm become political realities. Sienova, Mithraea, and the Covenant States all form out of Imperial Colonies. The Achaean city-states break away from Imperial control and each fights to gain influence over the lands that immediately surround it. A high-king or Ardrigh regains nominal control over the tribal chieftains of Galacia. Galacian peoples living in the mountains north of Mithraea remain independent for the moment. Magic is at a low, and what magic there is is unpredictable. |
| 800-1 BP |
Overall this is a period
of general
stability and prosperity. Populations begin to slowly
regrow.
They are kept in check by two invasions of the plains tribes in the
north,
and a plague which appears and strikes populated areas repeatedly from
around 400 to around 200 years ago. In general, kingdoms increase
in stability, centralization of power, and sophistication of
government.
Feudal states evolve towards bureaucracies, with the exception of
Galacia.
Mithraea lost control over their Southern territories in a civil war
just
over 20 years before the present.
Trade and a monetary economy increases and simple banking systems develop. Simple gunpowder weapons are invented around 150 years before the present, and the current level of technology is just at the level of the wheellock. The moveable type press has been in existence for a little more than a century and literacy rates are climbing. Magic also increased slowly over the duration, and the walls between human and fey lands are again weakening. The fey awaken, and summoners have begun to realize that demons and elementals are easier to call forth. Prophesies seem to predict another coming crux-time, perhaps at the turn of the Millennium. |
